Cleaning and caring for a Tiffany stained glass lamp shade with soft cloth to maintain its beauty

How to Care for Your Stained Glass Tiffany Lamp

A Tiffany lamp is more than a light source — it's a work of art. With proper care, your stained glass Tiffany lamp will retain its brilliance and beauty for decades. Here's everything you need to know about keeping your lamp in perfect condition.

Dusting Your Tiffany Lamp

Dust is the most common enemy of stained glass. We recommend dusting your Tiffany lamp weekly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean natural-bristle paintbrush. Gently brush between the lead came (the metal strips between the glass panels) to remove any buildup.

Avoid feather dusters, as they can snag on the lead came and potentially loosen glass panels over time.

Deep Cleaning Stained Glass

For a deeper clean, use a slightly damp cloth with a small amount of mild dish soap. Wipe each glass panel gently, then immediately dry with a clean dry cloth. Never allow water to sit on the lead came, as prolonged moisture can cause oxidation and discolouration.

Never use:

  • Ammonia-based cleaners (e.g. window sprays)
  • Abrasive cloths or sponges
  • Harsh chemical solvents

Cleaning the Lamp Base

Most Tiffany lamp bases are made from resin, metal, or bronze-finish materials. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately. For metal bases, a small amount of furniture polish on a cloth can restore shine — avoid spraying directly onto the base near the electrical fittings.

Bulb Care and Safety

Always use the correct wattage bulb as specified for your lamp. Excessive heat from an oversized bulb can stress the solder joints over time. We recommend using LED bulbs, which run cooler and extend the life of your lamp. Always switch off and allow the bulb to cool before replacing it.

Storing Your Tiffany Lamp

If storing your lamp, wrap the shade in acid-free tissue paper and place it upright in a sturdy box. Never stack anything on top of a Tiffany shade. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent any fading of the glass colours.

When to Seek Professional Repair

If you notice cracked glass panels, loose lead came, or flickering due to wiring issues, consult a professional stained glass restorer or electrician. Do not attempt to re-solder panels yourself without experience, as this can cause further damage.
